“Sharing Life Lessons”

Vanessa Sylvester

Six years ago, Jupiter native Vanessa Sylvester decided to spread her wings and re-locate to the New York City area. It was a life altering experience, “I learned what I was made of; I was tougher than I thought.”

Back home for two years now, Vanessa uses lessons from the Big Apple to run a website design company and share her passion for fitness with our local community. “New York City made a great impact on me. You are just thrown into it, you learn as you go, I learned from so many people about different cultures and beliefs.”

Tall and svelte with sleek brown hair, 29 year-old Vanessa is still learning with entrepreneurial gusto. After returning home, she immediately started connecting with people by opening a surf-inspired fitness studio, using balance and stability boards. “I’ve met more people in my last two years here through fitness.” She eventually had to let go of that venture when she started a web design company but still works as a fitness instructor three days a week. “It’s a pleasure helping others find an outlet and work toward a healthier lifestyle…it is pure joy.” She also relishes to her own daily workouts. “It brings balance, helps me to think clearer and re-energizes me. Without it, I would be walking around like a zombie.”

Vanessa now spends most of her time connecting with clients at Jupiter Website Design. She started the company with Carleton Hughes, a fellow Floridian, who she describes as the brains of the operation. “I handle the clients, walking them through concept, design and launch. I like getting to know the people, learning about other businesses and industries.” She takes particular pride in helping small businesses create an online presence because she knows it’s difficult to compete against corporations.

One year into running Jupiter Website Design, the biggest surprise for Vanessa is how friendly people have been, especially in Palm Beach County. “We live in such a fast paced world, we’re dealing with information overload and sometimes it’s hard to know where to start and where to end. So it’s nice to have a tight knit community with people willing to help you out.”

Vanessa counts that sense of community and being near family as top reasons why she’s glad to be home. She is the second oldest of four daughters and her mother, Joyce Fletcher has been a role model. “My mom taught us about strength, working hard, being grateful for what you have, and she’s always been very supportive of my decisions, even when she didn’t agree with them.”

A New York style determination emerges when Vanessa talks about future decisions and goals.

“I’m a little high strung. There’s so much I want to accomplish, so much I want to improve personally and in business. I’m constantly looking for ways to improve and grow and learn.”

She plans to get that done in part, by spreading her wings again and traveling. “I recharge when I travel. I recently visited my sister in Oregon but I also love weekend getaways to places like St. Augustine.” Of course, New York City is among favorite places she’s already experienced and there’s little doubt Vanessa will someday return to the place where she learned so much.
